20 Posts for 20 Years Series – Post #10

Scholarships have been a tremendous part of our culture as a chapter over the last twenty years. Since 2015 alone, we have been fortunate enough to provide over $130,000 to numerous participants attending college. Our two main sources of scholarship money have been provided by our Young Professionals Council (YPC) and long-time champion of The First Tee, Mr. Dave King.

Through the GOLF-A-THON and, most recently, the inaugural Scholarship Scramble, the Young Professionals Council has raised over $50,000 for our high-school aged participants attending college. Through individual pledges supporting YPC golfers in both the GOLF-A-THON and Scholarship Scramble and sponsorships, the support of the Young Professionals Council has become an important addition to providing scholarships for our young people.

And then there is Dave King. What can we say about the man who has a scholarship fund specifically for our participants? Those who know Dave King, know him as an educated man, a superb athlete who became a premier amateur golfer, and a philanthropist.  He learned the game of golf from his dad at St. David’s Golf Club in Wayne, Pennsylvania, where he went on to win five club championships as well as three more at Pine Valley. We are so proud to have a golfer of his caliber on our team, but more proud to say we have Dave King the philanthropist and friend as an advocate of what we do. Over the past four years Dave King has provided $50,000 so that our young people may put those funds toward their college education.

Most recently, the District Golf Foundation made a closing gift to our chapter of $25,000, half of which will be used for college scholarships in 2020. This gift, coupled with the $10,000 in scholarships awarded by the District Golf Foundation in 2016 has aided in the continuing education of our alums.

Through the continued support of, specifically, the Young Professionals Council and Dave King, as well as future donors, we hope that we can make an impact with college scholarships during the next twenty years and beyond!
