20 Posts for 20 Years Series – Post #7

Over the years we have seen the incredible efforts of incredible Board Members. 20 years later and we are still graced by the presence of two original Board Members: Chairman Emeritus, Jack Vardaman and Dan Tate. We simply could not put into words how much their efforts, along with the countless hours and dedication of other Board Members, have meant to us over the years, so we leave you with Dan Tate’s remarks from the first Board Meeting of our 20th year as a chapter…

Fellow Board Members:

At the conclusion of our meeting this afternoon, our Chairman Emeritus Jack Vardaman reminded us that as we celebrate our chapter’s twentieth anniversary we should take pride in the fact that we have accomplished a remarkable amount in that time.  I am perhaps the only person on the Board who remembers our very humble beginning. Indeed, we had our organizational meeting at Security Storage headquarters and started out very modestly with teaching and mentoring operations at Langston and East Potomac Park (Hains Point).

Jack’s typical modesty would not allow him to acknowledge that our growth from an entity confined to Washington, D.C., to one that encompasses the District, Montgomery County, Northern Virginia and Prince George’s County and positively touched over 500,000 youngsters has come about practically exclusively as a result of his steady and insistent leadership as our President and as our Chairman.

Jack Vardaman continues to challenge us to do more and to do better.  Still we can never lose sight of what he has done to ensure that we have come this far already.

Dan Tate

We cannot thank our Board Members enough for being champions for our mission, but most importantly, for our young people.
